These blinds can be classified broadly into 5 different categories, the Venetian blinds, the Roller blinds, the Roman blinds, the Pleated blinds and the Vertical blinds.
Many window blinds are made with slats of fabric, wood, plastic, or metal that adjust by rotating from an open position to a closed position by allowing slats to overlap. A roller blind does not have slats but consists of a single piece of material. Metal window blinds are often used outside of the home or business to protect against theft, temperature, vision, bad weather, and fire (in fire-prone areas). Often these blinds are machine-operated, rather than hand-operated. The horizontal version uses a thin woven corded "ladder" system to suspend the slats and enable slats to be closed via a rotating drum to which each upper end of the woven ladder is wrapped and attached. A lift cord allows the blind to be pulled up and stack tightly to top of the window when desired. One of the earliest patents for a window shade was in 1888 by George L. Castner.[3] The vertical version uses a generally wider slat and has the added feature of being able to pull a cord to stack the slats together either to one side or to separate in the centre and stack on each end. This vertical blind allows rotation of slats by a rotating shaft in the upper head rail housing which runs through independent geared carriers that will convert twisting of tilt rail to a rotation of each individual slat in synchrony. The original vertical blinds were invented in Kansas City, Missouri by Edward Bopp and Fredrick Bopp who held the original patent. The company name at the time was Sun Vertical. In the 1960s, the patent and company was sold.

Privacy Matters:
Consider before you choose whether you prefer complete privacy 100% of the time, or a moderate degree to maximize light. Perhaps your wish is to block a less than desirable view from a window. Shades And Flooring Window Treatments has excellent choices in all respects, plus many Top Down Bottom Up upgrades for shades that allow you to have your privacy and your sunshine, too. View Preservation: Great view? Don't block it, frame it. Select a window treatment that opens up the outside world while still serving your other needs. As a rule, wider louvers or slats on blinds or shutters will offer more "view space" when opened. The top down/bottom up options for shades and horizontal blinds also provide a means for looking out while preserving privacy. Energy Efficiency: An insulating window covering is like an investment. It can pay for itself in the long run. Since experts claim we can lose up to 40% of energy through the glass panes, keeping a heating bill down in the winter and holding the cool air in during the summer is a big factor. Cells in Honeycomb Shades do this marvelously. Shutters and Vertical Blinds are also tops. Roman Shades, Faux Wood Blinds and Wood Blinds can be counted on to insulate well, too. Light Control: There are occasions when you wish to protect yourselves and your fine furnishings from the damaging UV rays of the sun. Western and Southern exposures are most vulnerable. Horizontal Sheer Shades are just one good choice when you want to bask in the sunshine without the harmful effects. On the other hand, there may be rooms where you wish to cut the light, or block it entirely for daytime sleepers or media room viewing. Many Shades And Flooring Window Treatments Blinds shades and treatment are available with Room Dimming to Room Darkening features as an upgrade or an option. CurtainsBoth curtains and drapes consist of panels of fabric; it is how they are attached at the top that determines which category they fall into. By definition, curtains are gathered on a rod or attached to it by tabs, ties or rings. They are generally stationary; if they are opened and closed, it is done by hand.Curtains can be as simple as a flat panel tied back above the sash, pleated to resemble a drape, or voluminous creations. They can also be any length, from café style, which covers only the lower half of a window, to full-length curtains that reach to the floor. DrapesThese are the mainstay of window fashions. By definition, drapes are pleated panels that hang from hooks that attach to small slides on a rod. You open and close the panels by a cord that moves the slides along a track. The rod itself may either be covered by the panel or exposed. Pinch-pleated styles are traditional, but numerous variations exist. The length of your drapes can have great impact. For a clean, casual look, hang drapes so that they just touch the floor. For a more dramatic effect, allow the fabric to puddle four to six inches on the floor in luxurious folds.
The size of the room, the height of the windows, and the scale of the treatment will suggest the appropriate hardware for your drapes. Mount rods directly to the window frame or to the wall above it, depending on the look you want to achieve. To create the illusion of added height, hang the rod higher than the window frame.
